Judo Throws

Both of you stand upright, feet about shoulder width, moving: your lapel hand (tsurite) holds his collar or lapel at chest height, your sleeve hand (hikite) holds his sleeve at the elbow or just below. The lapel hand controls distance and his head, the sleeve hand pulls his arm and turns his shoulders; keep your elbows bent and your back straight so you feel his weight and are never bent over. Every throw starts with breaking his balance (kuzushi) in the direction he is already moving: he steps forward, pushes into you, leans back and retreats, turns in for his own throw, or blocks in a wide defensive stance — each opens its own group of throws. He fights for the dominant grip; the classic mistake is letting him take a high grip behind your neck while you hold only his sleeve.
