Takedown · Judo Throws

A side sacrifice throw from the grip fight standing to the top, for an opponent who pushes into you with his legs wide. Take sleeve and collar and lift with the lapel hand so his weight rises onto the toes of one foot. Step your supporting foot back and drop to your side, then stretch the other leg across the outside of his lead foot as a block, against the foot, not lifting. Pull both grips over your head in a big circle as you fall: his own push carries him forward over the leg. Commit fully, because a half drop leaves you on your back under him, and keep the grips until he lands, then roll with him to the top. If he stops pushing and stands back, it becomes a guard pull; if he steps over your leg, enter single leg X.

How to do it

  1. They push forward with the legs wide; take sleeve and collar, and lift with the lapel hand so their weight rises onto the toes of one foot.
  2. Step your supporting foot back and drop to your side: the back of the shoulder and the little-toe edge of the leg go to the mat.
  3. Stretch the other leg across the outside of their lead foot as a block, right against the foot, not lifting.
  4. Pull both grips over your head in a big circle as you fall, so their push carries them over the leg.
  5. Keep the grips until they land, turn with them and come up on top.

Key details

  • Use their push: you fall, they follow. The drop throws, not the arms.
  • The leg is a block, not a lift: it only stops the foot so the body goes over it.
  • Keep the grips until they land.
  • Lift with the lapel hand first so they stand on the toes of one foot.
  • Pull in a big circle and commit fully, never stop halfway: a half drop leaves you on your back under them.
  • Control the sleeve arm with an overwrap: take your lapel hand over their arm and grip the outside of the sleeve, so they cannot post that hand when you drop.
  • Throw diagonally into their front corner, not to the side, and catch the step as the foot comes down with the weight on it.

Common mistakes

  • Falling without their push. — With no forward momentum you end on your back with them standing. — Throw only when they drive forward.
  • Leg too far from their foot. — There is room between leg and foot, so they step past the block. — Put the leg right against the outside of the foot.
  • Letting the grips go when you land. — They stay up and pass your guard. — Pull through until they are down.
  • Leaving their sleeve arm free. — They post that hand on the mat as you drop and no takedown scores. — Switch to an overwrap on the sleeve before you drop.

How to drill it

Slow sacrifice falls with a pushing partner on crash mats, 6 each side. Focus on the leg placement.

Safety

Sacrifice throws land with force: train only on thick mats and let the partner breakfall. Check the IBJJF rules for your belt before competing.
