Uki Goshi

Takedown · Judo Throws

A floating hip throw from the grip fight standing to side control, for when he steps in toward you upright. Take the sleeve, slip your other arm under his armpit around the back of his waist, step your foot just inside his and pull him tight to your side: only part of your hip goes in front of his, across his belt line. Pull the sleeve and turn your hips and shoulders, bending forward, so he floats around your hip without being lifted; a lift would make it o goshi. The sleeve pull does most of the work, the waist arm keeps his belly on your hip, and you keep turning until he lands. If he blocks with his hips forward, ouchi gari; if he steps around your hip, harai goshi.

How to do it

  1. Take a collar or sleeve grip and wrap their waist with the other arm as they stand upright and step towards you.
  2. Step your right foot just inside their right foot and slip your arm under their armpit around the back of the waist.
  3. Pull them tight to your side with the waist arm; only part of your hip goes in front of theirs, across their belt line.
  4. Pull the sleeve and turn your hips and shoulders, bending forward, rolling them over the hip without lifting them.
  5. Keep turning until they land, keep the grip on the sleeve and follow into side control.

Key details

  • A turn, not a lift: they float over the hip. Only part of your hip goes in front: they turn around your hip, you do not lift them (that would be o goshi).
  • The arm around the waist pulls them tight, so their belly stays on your hip through the turn.
  • The sleeve pull does most of the work; the waist arm guides.
  • Keep turning and bend forward: stopping at the hip leaves them on your back.
  • Bend the knees so your belt is below theirs and keep no space between you: standing tall with a gap, the throw fails.

Common mistakes

  • Loading them deep on the hip and lifting. — It turns into a heavy o goshi and loses the floating turn. — Keep the hip only partly in front and turn.
  • Space between your side and them. — There is nothing to turn them around, and they slide off the hip. — Pull them tight with the waist arm.
  • Bending forward to lift. — You lose balance and fall on them. — Do not lift: keep turning and let the forward bend come with the rotation.

How to drill it

Uchikomi to the loaded position 10 each side, then 5 full throws on mats each side.

Safety

Hold the sleeve so the partner can breakfall with the other arm. Do not fall with them.
