Takedown · Judo Throws

A belt drop from the grip fight standing to side control, for the opponent who bends over and keeps you at arm's length with straight arms. Break a grip and move to his side, out of line with his arms, and grab the front of his belt with your near hand, ideally with a reverse grip under the belt. Step behind him and put your other hand on the front of his hip, keeping him tight against you so his feet stay fixed. Lift the belt and drive it back toward you while the other hand pushes his hip back: he lifts slightly and his upper body tips backward over his fixed feet. Getting to the side and behind comes first; from the front the belt is out of reach. If he turns to face you, body lock; if he drops to turtle, take the back.

How to do it

  1. They bend forward and keep you away with straight arms; from the front you cannot reach the belt.
  2. Break a grip and move to their side, out of line with their straight arms.
  3. Grab the front of their belt with your near hand, ideally with a reverse grip under the front of the belt.
  4. Step behind them and put the other hand on the front of their hip, keeping them tight against you so their feet stay fixed.
  5. Lift the belt and drive it back toward you while the other hand pushes the hip back: they lift a little and fall backward. Follow to side control.

Key details

  • Get to the side and behind first.
  • The belt hand lifts while both hands drive their hips back: they rise onto the heels and tip over their fixed feet.
  • Lift a little, then let them drop backward. Pull the belt continuously and keep them tight against you, so their feet stay fixed and only the upper body bends back.
  • A reverse grip under the front of the belt lifts them slightly and works better than an overhand grip.
  • A variant uses your leg behind theirs as a fulcrum.
  • Squat low with your legs as you step behind, as if sitting on a chair: bending at the waist takes the power out.

Common mistakes

  • Staying in front. — Their straight arms keep you away from the belt. — Break the grip and go to the side.
  • Lifting high by the belt. — It is heavy and the partner lands hard. — Lift a little and turn them backward.
  • Pushing the hip without pulling the belt. — Their feet are free to move: they step back and keep their balance. — Pull the belt and push the hip at the same moment.

How to drill it

Move to the side and grip the belt 8 times each side, then 5 slow throws each side on mats.

Safety

The partner falls backwards: control the fall, never throw them onto the head.
