Takedown · Judo Throws

A leg wheel from the grip fight standing to side control, for when he pushes and steps diagonally. Lift and pull with sleeve and collar to his front corner so he rises on the toes, and pivot on your supporting foot, letting his push turn you in. Stretch your other leg straight across the front of his knee, the shin diagonally just below the kneecap, and hold it still as an axle while your shoulders turn and both grips pull around your body: he wheels forward over the leg. Do not sweep with the leg, which costs your own balance on one foot, and throw in the direction of his step. If he bends the knee and steps past, harai goshi; if he pulls back, ouchi gari.

How to do it

  1. Grip sleeve and collar while they push and step diagonally; lift and pull to their front corner so they rise onto the toes.
  2. Turn in, pivoting on your supporting foot, using their push to bring you around.
  3. Stretch the other leg straight across the front of their knee, the lower leg diagonally across it just below the kneecap.
  4. Turn the shoulders and pull both grips around your body, so they wheel over the leg like a wheel over an axle.
  5. Stay standing on your supporting leg, keep the sleeve and follow into side control.

Key details

  • The leg is an axle: straight and still. Sweeping on one leg costs your own balance.
  • Their forward push powers the wheel: throw in the direction of their step.
  • Turn the shoulders, the hands follow.
  • Put the lower leg diagonally across the front of their knee, below the kneecap.
  • Lift and pull to their front corner so they rise on the toes before the leg goes in.
  • Lift your knee high before you cross the leg over, so it lands on their knee and not below it, where they can lift the leg over.
  • It is a momentum throw: circle them so they follow you, or fake osoto gari and pivot the other way.

Common mistakes

  • Leg too low. — A low leg is easy to step over. — Leg at knee height.
  • Sweeping with the leg. — Sweeping on one leg costs your own balance. — Hold the leg still and turn the upper body.
  • Throwing against their direction. — Without their push they are too heavy to wheel. — Throw in the direction of their step.

How to drill it

Turn-in uchikomi 10 each side, then 5 throws each side on mats with a pushing partner.

Safety

Keep your leg on the front of the knee, never on the side of the joint. Hold the sleeve for the breakfall.
