Takedown · Judo Throws

A heel trip from the grip fight standing to side control, for the defensive opponent who stands wide with his lead foot far forward. Push his collar back so his weight goes onto the lead heel, then drop your level fast, legs bent and head up, and grab between the heel and the ankle, fingers under the Achilles. Pull the heel toward you and up to your hip while the other hand pushes his chest back at the same moment: top back, base forward, and he falls backward with no foot under him. Step a little to the side first so you can see the ankle, and stay on your feet to follow past the legs. If he steps the foot back, go to a single leg; if he grabs your head, ankle pick.

How to do it

  1. They stand wide and defensive, one foot far forward; the lead foot is your target.
  2. Push their collar back to put the weight on the lead heel, so the upper body is already going backward.
  3. Drop your level fast, legs bent and head up, and grab the heel of the lead foot between the heel and the ankle, fingers under the Achilles.
  4. Pull the heel towards you and up to your hip, in the direction the foot points, while you push the chest or lapel back at the same moment.
  5. They fall back with no foot under them; stay on your feet, follow them down past the legs into side control.

Key details

  • Push and pull at once: chest back, heel forward. The top and the base go in opposite directions.
  • Take the heel, not the toes: grip between the heel and the ankle, fingers under the Achilles.
  • Change level fast, keep the head up.
  • Step a little to the side first so you are side-on and can see the ankle: picking from straight in front puts your head in the way and weakens the pull.
  • Pull the heel towards you and up to your hip; push the lapel back at the same moment.

Common mistakes

  • Grabbing the heel without the push. — Their weight stays forward: they sprawl or lift the leg away. — Push the chest back first.
  • Head down. — They catch a guillotine or snap you down. — Eyes forward, back straight.
  • Diving to the knees. — On the knees you have no drive to finish. — Bend the legs, stay on the feet.

How to drill it

Partner in a wide stance, 10 heel grabs each side with the push, then 5 finishes each side.

Safety

Pull the heel, never twist it. The partner falls back: they tuck the chin and breakfall.
