O Soto Otoshi

Takedown · Judo Throws

A major outer drop from the grip fight standing to side control, for when he leans back on straight legs. Break his balance to the rear corner with sleeve and collar so the weight sits on one heel, then step deep beside his lead leg, level with his foot, chest to chest. Set your calf behind his upper thigh, just under the buttock, and drive the leg down to the mat like a stomp while your chest drives into him and both hands drop straight down toward the mat. There is no big reap as in osoto gari: the leg blocks and your body weight drops him. Block high on the thigh, not at the knee, which would take torque, or the ankle, which is stepped over. If he steps the leg back, kosoto gari.

How to do it

  1. They lean back on straight legs; grip sleeve and collar and break the balance to their rear corner so the weight sits on that heel.
  2. Step deep beside their lead leg with your near foot, level with their foot, chest to chest.
  3. Lift your other leg outside theirs and set your calf on the back of their upper thigh, just under the buttock: high, not at the knee or ankle.
  4. Drive the leg down the back of their thigh to the mat like a stomp, while your chest drives into them and both hands drop straight down toward the mat.
  5. They fall back over your leg: your body weight drops them. Follow into side control.

Key details

  • No big reap: the leg blocks, the chest throws. Your body weight drops them, not a leg swing: this is a drop, not osoto gari.
  • Chest to chest, weight forward on them.
  • The deep step puts you beside them.
  • Block high on the thigh, not at the knee or ankle: the knee takes torque, the ankle is stepped over.
  • Break the balance to their rear corner first, so the weight sits on that heel.

Common mistakes

  • Stepping short. — You cannot reach behind the leg. — Step your foot level with their foot.
  • Leaning back yourself. — Your weight is no longer on them, and they counter with osoto gaeshi. — Keep your chest on theirs.
  • Turning your head and turning them to the side. — They turn with you and whip you over with their own osoto gari. — Look straight ahead and drop straight down; do not twist them.

If they defend

  • They counter with a reap of their own. → Keep the chest pressure and base wide.

How to drill it

Uchikomi to the blocked position 10 each side, then 5 throws each side on mats.

Safety

The partner falls straight back: hold the sleeve and pull up so the head does not hit the mat. The partner tucks the chin.
