Makikomi

Takedown · Judo Throws

A wraparound sacrifice throw from the grip fight standing to kesa gatame, for when he stands wide and holds you tight so normal throws are blocked. Clamp his sleeve arm tight under your armpit, let go of your other grip and turn in, back to his chest and hips deep past his side; swing your free arm over his arm and across your body so it is wrapped to your chest. Fall forward and turn past his front foot, face turned away, so your weight carries him over your body around the trapped arm. The arm is the axis: hold it all the way and land on your side beside him, not on him. Safety: his arm is trapped and he cannot breakfall with it, so drill only with partners who can take the fall. If he pulls the arm out, harai goshi; if he steps around your front, kosoto gari.

How to do it

  1. Take control of their sleeve arm: soto makikomi traps that arm. With the sleeve hand pull it out straight and in toward you; the clamp under your armpit comes in step 3.
  2. Release your other grip and turn in, your back against their chest, driving your hips deep so they stick out past their side.
  3. Swing your free arm over their arm and across your body, turning it over from above so the arm is wrapped against your chest and the elbow is clamped in your armpit.
  4. Fall forward and turn, past their front foot, carrying them over your body with your weight; turn your face away and keep rolling.
  5. Land on your side beside them, not on them, then turn onto them into kesa gatame.

Key details

  • The trapped arm is the axis: hold it to your body all the way, so they have to follow your rotation.
  • The weight of your fall does the throwing.
  • Use it when they hold you tight and a normal throw is blocked.
  • Turn their arm over from above and clamp the elbow in your armpit. Drive your hips deep so they stick out past their side.
  • Turn your face away and keep rolling as you drop: the rotation, not a straight fall, carries them over.
  • Shoot your leg across past theirs as you turn and roll forward like a breakfall, wrapping them around your body.

Common mistakes

  • Falling onto the partner. — Your full weight lands on their ribs. — Fall beside them and turn toward the mat.
  • A loose arm trap. — They pull the arm out as you turn and land behind you. — Keep the arm pulled to your side as you turn in, and clamp it under the armpit before you fall.
  • Falling straight down. — There is no rotation and they stay on their feet. — Turn and fall forward past their front foot.

How to drill it

Teach on crash mats: 5 slow throws each side, stopping at the landing. Then combine uchi mata into makikomi, 5 chains.

Safety

Your body falls together with the partner: never land with your elbow or full weight on their chest or neck. The partner cannot breakfall the trapped arm; only for experienced students.
