Takedown · Judo Throws
A counter to his hip throw from the grip fight standing to side control: you lift him off your hip and land him on yours. As he turns in for o goshi or a similar hip throw, drop your hips behind and below his so he cannot load you, wrap his waist or take his belt with your arm around his back. Thrust your hips forward and up to lift him off the mat, lifting with the legs and hips, not the back. While he is in the air, swing your hips across in front of his, so that he comes down onto your hip instead of his feet, then turn as in o goshi with the sleeve pulling around: he falls forward over your hip onto his back. It begins like ura nage, but instead of falling back with him you stay standing and switch hips. The key is the lift: without it there is no time to shift. Shifting the hips before he leaves the mat only lets him step around. If he sits down to stop the lift, take the back; if he lands on his feet in front of you, tani otoshi.
The partner enters o goshi slowly; you block, lift and switch the hips, then set them down without throwing, 3 x 6. Full throws only on crash mats with experienced partners.
The partner falls from a lift: keep the sleeve so they land on the back, never on the head. Only on thick mats with partners who can breakfall; protect your lower back on the lift.
Pick a position, then select a technique to see its trigger and what it unlocks. Icon = type of move. Color bar: green position, navy move, red submission, black chained finish.
