Yoko Throws

Takedown · Judo Throws

Side sacrifice throws, yoko guruma, yoko otoshi, yoko wakare and yoko sumi gaeshi, take you from the grip fight standing to the top after a roll-through. They work when he turns in for a throw or bends over you with his hips back, his weight forward over you. Grip the belt or wrap the body from the side, keep the sleeve with the other hand to steer, and slide your leg between his legs (yoko guruma) or across his feet (yoko otoshi), under his line of fall. Drop onto your side and pull him over your body in the direction he is already moving: your falling weight throws, not your arms. Land facing where he falls and roll through on top. If he drops the hips and sits back, you are in open guard. Safety: keep the sleeve so he can breakfall.

How to do it

  1. Wait for them to turn in for a throw or bend over you with the hips back: their weight is then forward and over you.
  2. Grip the belt or wrap the body from the side, and keep the sleeve grip with the other hand so you can steer the fall.
  3. Slide your leg between their legs (yoko guruma) or across their feet (yoko otoshi), so the leg is under their line of fall.
  4. Drop onto your side and pull them over your body in the direction they are already moving; your falling weight does the throwing, not the arms.
  5. Land on your side facing where they fall, roll through with them and come up on top.

Key details

  • Sacrifice throws use their momentum: never try to lift. Your falling body weight throws, not the arms.
  • Commit: a half-hearted drop puts you on your back under them.
  • Land on your side, facing where they will fall, so you can keep turning and come up on top.
  • Yoko guruma: a counter to their hip throw, your leg slides between their legs from the front.
  • Yoko otoshi: lift first, then drop with your leg outside their foot and pull down in a big circle.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping when they stand upright. — There is no forward momentum to use, so you land on the bottom. — Throw only when they lean or turn into you.
  • Falling flat on the back. — The rotation stops and they land on top of you in side control. — Fall onto the side and keep turning.
  • Letting go of the grips. — Without them nothing carries their body around and the rotation stops halfway. — Hold the belt and sleeve until they land.

If they defend

  • They step over your leg. → Switch sides: the other yoko throw goes the opposite way.

How to drill it

Learn on crash mats only: 5 slow throws each side with a cooperative partner, then with the partner turning in for a hip throw.

Safety

Sacrifice throws land the partner fast and from height: use crash mats and experienced partners. Never drop straight down onto a partner's knee.
