Takedown · Judo Throws

A pure hand throw from the grip fight standing to side control, for the moment he takes long steps forward. Walk him forward with sleeve and collar, stepping back further than he steps so his balance runs ahead of his feet. As a long step lands, drop to one knee on the sleeve side, a little behind and beside your front foot at 30 to 45 degrees, and pull the sleeve forward first, then down and around in a big circle while the collar hand pushes the same circle: he turns over his shoulder instead of landing on his hands. There is no hip, leg or body contact; the timing of the extra step does the work. If he shortens his steps, de ashi barai; if he posts a hand on the mat, take the back.

How to do it

  1. Grip sleeve and collar; walk them forward so they take long steps, stepping back further than they step so their balance runs ahead of their feet.
  2. As a long step lands, drop to one knee on the side of the sleeve, the knee a little behind and to the side of your front foot, at 30–45°.
  3. Pull the sleeve forward first, then down and in a circle towards the mat; there is no body contact, nothing touches their legs.
  4. Push the collar hand in the same circle so they turn over their shoulder instead of landing on their hands.
  5. Keep the sleeve as they land, come up and take side control.

Key details

  • Only the hands throw: no hip, no leg, no body contact.
  • Timing: their balance is ahead of their feet. Step back further than their step: the extra distance breaks the balance.
  • The circle goes down and around, not straight down: the pull goes forward first, then down and around in a big arc.
  • Drop the knee a little behind and to the side of your front foot, at 30–45°.
  • A live set-up: push them, and when they push back, drop and use that push. Angle your body so they pass beside you, not into you.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling when they stand still. — Nothing happens: a hand throw needs motion. — Make them walk first.
  • Dropping to the knee too early. — They stop, keep their balance over the feet, and you are on the knee. — Drop as the long step lands.
  • Pulling straight down. — They land on their hands and do not turn over. — Circle so they roll over the shoulder.

How to drill it

Walking partner, 8 slow throws each side on crash mats. Partner learns the forward roll breakfall.

Safety

The partner must know the forward breakfall. Keep the sleeve so they roll over the shoulder, not onto the head.
