Tsurikomi Goshi
Takedown · Judo Throws
A lifting-pulling hip throw from the grip fight standing to side control, for the moment he pushes into you upright. Hold the lapel high and lift that hand up and forward so his weight rises onto his toes, your forearm and upper arm pressing up into his armpit: that lift is the kuzushi. Step inside his feet and turn low, knees bent, the back of your waist flat against his belly and your body square to his. Straighten the legs to load him on the hip, pull the sleeve around your body and turn your head and shoulders down toward the mat: he rotates forward over the hip. Without the lift he stays flat-footed and too heavy to load. If he blocks your hip with a hand, go to tai otoshi; if he drops his hips behind you, kouchi gari.
How to do it
- Grip collar and sleeve, the collar hand high on the lapel, and wait for them to push into you upright.
- Lift the collar hand up and forward so their weight rises onto the toes; your forearm and upper arm press up against their armpit. This lift is the kuzushi.
- Step inside their feet and turn low, knees bent: the back of your waist goes flat against their belly, your body square and parallel to theirs.
- Straighten the legs to load them on your hip and pull the sleeve around your body, keeping the collar hand lifting.
- Turn your head and shoulders down, looking over your front shoulder at the mat; they rotate over the hip. Follow into side control.
Key details
- The lift of the collar is the kuzushi: without it they stay flat-footed and too heavy to load.
- Stay square: your hips do not stick out to the side, your body is parallel and tight to theirs, so their weight rests across your lower back.
- Lift with the legs, rotate with the head: where the head turns, the shoulders and the throw follow.
- Grip the lapel high and lift with the upper arm against their armpit: the arm acts as a lever under the shoulder.
- Drop your hips well below their belt: when they straighten up to block your entry, their hips are above yours and they go straight over your hip; with the hips level, they just bend over you.
Common mistakes
- Entering with a gap. — Without back-to-belly contact there is nothing to lift them on, and they slip off to the side. — Step your feet inside theirs and pull them tight onto your lower back.
- Pulling the collar down. — Their head drops, they bend over your back and their weight stays back on the heels. — Lift the collar toward the ceiling before you turn.
- Looking at the partner during the throw. — Your head stays up and the rotation stops on your hip. — Look over your front shoulder toward the mat.
How to drill it
3 x 10 uchikomi with a pause on the load; then 3 x 5 moving entries as the partner pushes you backward.
Safety
Teach and practise the side breakfall first. Do not fall on top of the partner with your full weight.
