Takedown · Judo Throws

A rear throw counter from the grip fight standing to the top, for when he turns his back into you for a hip throw. React on the turn: drop your hips behind and below his, knees bent and back straight, wrap his waist with both arms and lock your hands at his belly before anything else. Thrust your hips up and forward to lift him off the mat with hips and legs, not the back, then arch and fall onto your back, throwing him over your shoulder. Your hips must be under his, the arch is the throwing power, and a half fall leaves him on top of you. Safety: a heavy throw; drill it slowly with partners who can breakfall and never drive anyone onto the head or neck. If he drops his hips too, take the back; if he steps away, body lock.

How to do it

  1. They turn their back into you for a hip throw; react on the turn, before their hip gets under yours.
  2. Drop your hips behind and below theirs, knees bent and back straight, so your hips end under their hips.
  3. Wrap their waist tightly with both arms and lock the hands firmly at their belly before you do anything else.
  4. Thrust your hips up to lift them off the mat, lifting with the hips and legs, not with the back.
  5. Thrust the hips forward, arch back, look over one shoulder and fall back in a circle over that shoulder, throwing them over it.

Key details

  • A counter: the hips must be under theirs, or there is nothing to lift them with.
  • Lift with the hips, not the back.
  • The back arch is the throwing power: without it they are only dropped.
  • Lock your hands firmly around the waist before you fall.
  • Commit fully: a half fall leaves you on your back under them.
  • Keep your head below theirs when you lock the hands: if your head is higher, you land on it.
  • Bring your hips through so they land across the shoulder blades first, then the back: not on the head, not on your locked hands.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting with a bent back. — The load goes onto your lower back: it hurts your back and fails. — Straight back, drive with the legs and hips.
  • Falling back without the arch. — Their weight lands on you and nothing is thrown. — Drive the hips forward and arch as you fall.
  • Loose waist grip. — They slide down out of the hug and finish their throw. — Lock the hands tight at the belly.

How to drill it

Lift only: partner turns in, you get the hips under and lift, 8 reps. Full throws only on crash mats with experienced partners.

Safety

A high-amplitude throw: the partner may land on the head and neck. Only for experienced students on thick mats; never slam.
