You are under him on your back or side, and one of his legs is trapped between yours, your legs crossed around his thigh or knee; on top he is trying to flatten you, set a crossface and win the underhook to pass. What keeps it: being on your side facing him with frames or an underhook, never flat on your back, and squeezing his trapped leg so he cannot pull it free. Your branches: win the underhook — then dogfight, old school sweep, deep half guard; a knee shield to hold distance; lockdown to stretch his leg; octopus guard when he has won the underhook; coyote guard. His goal is the crossface and the underhook; the beginner mistake is letting the crossface turn your face away and flatten you.
