Gator Roll

Guard pass · Half Guard

The gator roll turns his half guard escape into your pass: you roll him over your body and land in side control. The moment is when he comes up on his side with a deep underhook, head outside, driving into you. Wrap your arm under his neck and around his underhooking arm so head and arm sit in one loop, lock your hands and squeeze. Then sit through to your side and roll over your back toward his trapped arm, the way he is already pushing: the trapped arm cannot post, so he goes over with you. Head and arm must be together; the head alone only cranks the neck. If he pulls the arm out, take the Front Headlock; if he blocks with the far leg, return to the Half Guard Smash Pass.

How to do it

  1. From half guard top, they come up on their side with an underhook, head outside, driving into you.
  2. Wrap their head and underhook arm together with your arm: your arm goes under their neck and around the underhooking arm, so head and arm are in one loop.
  3. Grip your hands and squeeze the loop tight, so the head and arm cannot separate.
  4. Sit through to your side and roll over your back toward the side of their trapped arm, the way they are pushing, pulling them with you.
  5. Come out on top in side control and keep the grip until you settle.

Key details

  • Head and arm together: a roll without the arm only drags the head and cranks the neck.
  • It turns their best escape into your pass: the harder they drive on the underhook, the easier they roll.
  • Roll the way they are pushing, adding their force to yours.
  • You roll toward the side of their trapped arm, so the trapped arm cannot post to stop the roll.
  • The same entry can finish as an anaconda or a d’arce.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling with only the head. — It cranks the neck and they post with the free arm. — Wrap the head and the arm together.
  • Rolling the wrong way, against their push. — You fight their push and stay underneath. — Roll toward the side of their underhook.
  • Letting go when they land. — They turn to the knees. — Keep the grip until you settle.

How to drill it

Partner comes up on the underhook; you gator roll to side control, 6 each side slowly.

Safety

The head is trapped during the roll: hold head and arm together, never the neck alone.
