Back Take

Chain finish · Half Guard

A chain from the half guard kimura: when he rolls forward over his trapped shoulder to escape the lock, you go from bottom to his back. Keep the figure-four locked and use it to steer the roll; as long as you hold the arm he cannot turn to face you. Follow behind him, turning to his side so your chest lands on his back with no space, and slide both hooks in, heels inside his thighs and feet uncrossed, while you still hold the arm. Only then let go of the kimura and switch to a seatbelt across his chest. Letting the arm go early lets him turn back in. If he sits back into you, finish the kimura; if he turns back to face you, come up to side control.

How to do it

  1. From the kimura grip, let them roll forward to escape the lock; keep the figure-four locked and use it to steer them into the roll.
  2. Keep the grip and follow behind them, turning to their side so your chest comes onto their back with no space.
  3. Slide your hooks in on the inside of their thighs, heels in and feet apart, while you still hold the arm.
  4. Only then release the kimura and switch to a seatbelt grip across the chest, one arm over the shoulder and one under the armpit.

Key details

  • The kimura grip steers them into the roll: as long as you hold the arm, they cannot turn to face you.
  • Hooks go in before you let go of the arm.
  • Chest to their back with no space: any gap gives them room to turn in.
  • If they roll to escape the kimura, follow with the grip still locked instead of opening it to chase them.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the arm go too soon. — As soon as the arm is free they turn to face you and the back is gone. — Hold it until both hooks are in.
  • Back flat against back. — With your back against theirs there is no room to slide the hooks in. — Turn to their side, chest toward their back, before the hooks.
  • Crossing your feet. — Crossed feet are easy to trap, and they answer with a foot lock. — Put the heels inside their thighs and keep the feet apart.

How to drill it

Kimura, roll, hooks, seatbelt, 8 reps each side; then the partner fights the hooks.
