Half Butterfly Sweep

Sweep · Half Guard

Half guard bottom to top through the butterfly hook, used when he leans his weight onto you. Keep the underhook on the hook side deep and your head tight to his chest, and trap his other arm at the triceps or sleeve so he cannot post with it. Fall to the side of the trapped arm, pulling him with you, and at the same moment lift with the butterfly hook while your bottom leg holds his trapped leg: his hips go up and over and he rolls across the arm you hold. Follow him over and come up on top before he can turn. Lying flat, or lifting before you fall to the side, only pushes him up and back down. If he posts the far hand wide, switch to the old school sweep; if he sprawls his hips back, wrestle up to the single leg.

How to do it

  1. In half butterfly, take the underhook on the hook side deep and keep your head tight to his chest.
  2. Trap his other arm at the triceps or sleeve so it cannot post.
  3. When he leans his weight onto you, fall to the side of the trapped arm, pulling him with you.
  4. Lift with the butterfly hook while your bottom leg holds his trapped leg; he rolls over the arm you hold.
  5. Follow him over and come up on top before he can turn.

Key details

  • Fall to the side first, then lift: lifting from flat only pushes him up.
  • Block the arm on the side you fall to: it is the arm he would post with.
  • His weight on the hook is what you lift: wait for him to lean in.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting without the arm control. — He posts the hand and stays on top. — Trap the triceps or sleeve before you fall.
  • Losing the underhook. — He flattens you and the hook loses its lift. — Keep the underhook deep and the head on his chest.
  • Hook too shallow. — It slides off his thigh as you lift. — Put the instep deep behind his thigh, near the knee.

How to drill it

Half butterfly, partner leans in on your count, sweep 8 each side; then he reacts by posting or sprawling.
