Floating Pass

Guard pass · Half Guard

The floating pass takes you over butterfly or half butterfly guard to side control by keeping your weight on his upper body, never on his hooks. Pin him back with chest or shoulder pressure on his chest, hands controlling his far underhook or his hips, and lift your hips so your legs stay light and float above his shins. His hooks lift only what rests on them: with your weight on his chest they have nothing to elevate. Walk your legs around his knees to the side in small steps, staying on your toes, and drop your hips to the mat only once they are past his legs. The common error is sitting down on his legs to rest: the hooks catch your weight and the sweep comes. If he elevates a leg to sweep or re-guard, the leg left between his legs becomes an entry into a leg entanglement; if he recovers both hooks, go to the X-Pass.

How to do it

  1. Against butterfly or half butterfly, pin him back with chest or shoulder pressure on his chest.
  2. Control his far underhook or his hips with your hands.
  3. Lift your hips and stay on your toes so your legs float above his shins.
  4. Walk your legs around his knees to one side in small steps, weight staying on his chest.
  5. Drop your hips to the mat only when they are past his legs, and settle in side control.

Key details

  • Weight on his upper body, never on his hooks.
  • Light legs: on your toes, hips up until you are past.
  • Small steps keep your chest pressure constant.
  • If he elevates your leg, his leg is between yours: that is a leg entanglement entry.

Common mistakes

  • Sitting on his legs to rest. — The hooks catch your weight and he sweeps. — Keep the hips up and weight on his chest.
  • Big steps around the legs. — The chest pressure drops and he sits up into you. — Take small steps, chest always on him.
  • Losing the far arm. — He underhooks and comes up to his knees. — Control his far underhook or shoulder.

How to drill it

Partner in butterfly guard tries to lift you; 1-minute rounds floating around to both sides without sitting on his legs.
