Ashi Garami

Position · Leg Locks

A leg entanglement: you sit facing him, one of his legs runs between yours, and your hips are close to his hip. Your inside leg goes behind his thigh, your outside foot sits on his hip, and his foot is trapped under your armpit on the same side. What holds it: knees pinched together around his thigh to control the knee line, your hips tight to his so the leg cannot slide out, and his foot locked to your ribs. From here you move to Outside Ashi Garami, the Saddle, 50-50, Cross Ashi Garami or Backside 50-50, depending on how his leg and hips react. His goals are to pull the knee out past your hips or to turn and attack your own heel; the detail beginners miss is that control comes from the knee line and hip contact, not from the hands on the foot.

How to do it

  1. Hold one of their legs between your legs, your outside foot on their hip on the same side, so it keeps them from stepping forward onto you.
  2. Your inside leg hooks under their thigh, from behind, so the leg cannot be pulled back.
  3. Squeeze your knees to pin their knee, so it stays between your thighs and cannot slip past your hips.
  4. Hug the foot under your armpit, elbow tight to your ribs, so the foot is trapped against your body.
  5. Sit up, chest forward, and attack the straight ankle lock or change to another entanglement.

Key details

  • Control the knee line: the knee cannot slip past your hips, so they cannot bend the leg and pull it out.
  • Foot on the hip stops them coming forward and keeps the distance for your attacks.
  • Sitting up keeps you out of their reach.

Common mistakes

  • Loose knees. — Their knee slips out and the leg is gone. — Squeeze the knees together.
  • Lying flat on your back. — They stand up or pass over your legs. — Sit up with your chest forward.
  • No foot on the hip. — They step forward and smash the position. — Keep the outside foot on the hip.

If they defend

  • They pull the knee out. → Follow with the legs to 50-50 or outside ashi.
  • They stand up. → Off-balance them backwards with the hip foot.

How to drill it

Ashi garami entries from open guard, 10 each side; then 1-minute positional rounds.

Safety

Learn to hold the position before attacking: leg locks injure quickly.
