Saddle

Position · Leg Locks

Your legs lock around his hips and one leg: his leg runs between yours, your knees squeeze his thigh, and your feet close around his far hip, pinning the knee line. It is the most controlling leg-lock position — the same position as Cross Ashi Garami once your feet fully lock, named for the closed grip rather than the entry. Hold it with the knee squeeze, the locked feet and his heel trapped by your armpit. If he stops turning and the heel is open, finish the Heel Hook from Saddle; if he keeps the knee bent, the Calf Slicer; if he turns the knee in to roll out, the Inverted Heel Hook. He will try to roll with the rotation and kick your hips away with his free leg. In the saddle the knee is badly exposed: rotate slowly, and as the defender tap early rather than spin against the lock.

How to do it

  1. From outside ashi, bring your outside leg over to the inside of their thigh, between their legs.
  2. Triangle your legs around their thigh, the lock tight just above the knee, so the knee cannot be pulled out.
  3. Their free leg is outside your triangle: block it with a hand or foot so they cannot kick or step over.
  4. Control the foot, hugged to your chest, and keep your hips close to their hip.
  5. From here attack the heel, turning slowly and waiting for the tap.

Key details

  • The strongest control of the leg: the knee line is pinned from both sides.
  • The triangle stops the knee from turning out.
  • Control the free leg with a hand or foot.

Common mistakes

  • Loose triangle. — They pull the knee out of the lock. — Lock the triangle tight above the knee.
  • Ignoring the free leg. — They kick your head or step over. — Block the free leg with a hand.
  • Fast heel hooks in training. — The knee tears before any pain. — Turn slowly and wait for the tap.

If they defend

  • They hide the heel and turn. → Switch to the kneebar or calf slicer.
  • They try to stand. → Pull them down with the triangle.

How to drill it

Outside ashi to saddle transitions, 10 each side; then positional rounds without finishes.

Safety

Heel hooks from the saddle are banned in the IBJJF gi and allowed only for brown and black belts in no-gi: check your rules.
