Z-Lock

Submission · Leg Locks

A knee lock from a saddle-like leg entanglement: his trapped leg is bent and pinned between your legs, and lifting it with your underhooking arm puts the pressure into the knee and the hip. In the one coach demonstration we have (no-gi, squid guard) it is entered from De La Riva with an underhook: kick him off balance until his weight leaves the foot, take a modified X hook on his thigh, fall and scoop him into the saddle, then keep the underhook and lift. Keep the knee pinned by your legs: a free leg turns and unloads the knee. If the lift does not finish, his foot is already by your ribs: switch to the ankle lock. Our sources on the exact grip are thin, so learn it hands-on from a coach who knows it, lift slowly and check the rules.

How to do it

  1. Entry shown by one coach (no-gi): from De La Riva with an underhook on his leg, grab your own shin and kick to take his weight off that foot.
  2. Put a modified X hook on his thigh, bring the other leg under, knees in, and fall, scooping him into the saddle.
  3. Keep his trapped leg bent and pinned between your legs, the underhook still on it.
  4. Finish: lift the leg slowly with the underhook; the pressure goes into the knee and the hip. Stop at the tap.
  5. If it does not finish, the foot is by your ribs: switch to the ankle lock.

Key details

  • Take his weight off the foot before the entry, or you cannot elevate him.
  • The leg stays bent and pinned: a free knee turns and unloads.
  • The ankle lock is the backup: the foot is already by your ribs.

Common mistakes

  • Entering while his weight is on the foot. — You cannot lift him into the entanglement. — Kick him off balance first so the foot gets light.
  • Letting the knee free. — He turns with the lift and the pressure disappears. — Pin the leg with your legs before you lift.
  • Lifting with a jerk. — The knee is hurt before he can tap. — Lift slowly and stop at the first tap.

How to drill it

Entry only: from De La Riva with an underhook kick, hook and fall into the saddle, 5 reps per side, no finish; the finish only slowly with an experienced partner and a coach watching.

Safety

A knee lock: lift very slowly, tap early when it is on you, and check the event rules.
