Cross Ashi Garami

Position · Leg Locks

Your legs are inside his with your feet crossed on his far hip, his trapped leg running between yours and his foot by your armpit. Squeeze your knees on his thigh so the knee line stays controlled and keep your hips tight to his; the crossed feet stop him from pulling the leg out. The heel is exposed for inside attacks: if his knee is stuck and the heel open, the Inside Heel Hook; if he puts his foot on your hip, the Estima Lock. Close your feet into a full lock around the hip and this is the Saddle. He will try to clear your feet, push your hips away and roll; keep the knees pinched, because once his knee slips past your hips the leg lock is gone.

How to do it

  1. From ashi garami, turn your hips so your legs are inside theirs, your hips close to their trapped leg.
  2. Put your outside foot on their far hip, across their body, so it blocks the hip from turning.
  3. Cross your other foot over it, so your feet are crossed on the hip bone, not lower on the thigh.
  4. Squeeze your knees to pin their knee line between your thighs, and hold the foot with your arms, hugged to your chest.
  5. Attack the inside heel hook, or close your feet into a full lock around the hip to move to the saddle.

Key details

  • Crossed feet on the hip stop them from turning away: the hip is pinned, so the knee cannot rotate out.
  • The knees hold the knee line: it must stay between your thighs.
  • It is a hold between ashi and the saddle: used for no-gi leg locks.

Common mistakes

  • Feet crossed on the thigh, not the hip. — Their hip turns freely and the knee escapes. — Put the feet on the hip bone.
  • Knees apart. — Their knee slips out past your hips. — Squeeze the knees together on their thigh.
  • Attacking the heel from a loose position. — They spin and the knee takes damage. — Control first: feet crossed on the hip, knees pinched, then attack.

If they defend

  • They hide the heel under your armpit. → Move to the straight ankle lock or the saddle.
  • They pull the knee back out. → Follow to 50-50 or back to ashi garami.

How to drill it

Entries from ashi garami to cross ashi and saddle, 10 each side; then 30-second positional rounds: they escape, you hold.

Safety

The inside heel hook from here injures the knee with no warning: rotate slowly and tap early. Only for athletes who know leg lock escapes.
