50-50 Guard

Position · Leg Locks

A mirrored entanglement: each of you holds one of the other's legs, your outside leg crossing over his hip and his doing the same over yours, so both knee lines are trapped and both heels are within reach. It is mutual, so the first to attack or sweep usually wins the exchange. One school treats it as the weakest rung of the leg-lock hierarchy — a place to pass through to the saddle or outside ashi garami; others build a whole game here, so take that as a default, not a rule. Hide your own heel first — keep it away from his armpit and grips — then attack: if his knee is stuck and the heel open, the Inside Heel Hook or Mikey Lock; if he points the foot straight, the 50-50 Ankle Lock. The danger is reaching for his heel while yours is exposed.

How to do it

  1. Your leg and their leg are wrapped around each other the same way: each of you holds one of the other's legs.
  2. Triangle your legs around their thigh, tight above the knee, so their knee cannot slide out.
  3. Hide your own heel behind their hip, so they cannot cup it for a heel hook.
  4. Control their foot, hugging it to your chest, and look for the heel.
  5. Then decide: attack or sweep first, or move on to the saddle or outside ashi garami.

Key details

  • A symmetrical position: they can attack you too.
  • Your heel hidden first, attack second: an exposed heel lets them catch it at the same moment.
  • Break their triangle to escape.

Common mistakes

  • Attacking with your own heel exposed. — They catch your heel at the same time. — Hide your heel before you attack.
  • Standing up in the entanglement. — They fall back and take a heel hook. — Free the leg before you stand.
  • No triangle. — Their knee slips out and they escape. — Lock the legs around the thigh.

If they defend

  • They go for your heel. → Hide it and push their knee down.
  • They turn away to backside 50-50. → Follow and take the heel.

How to drill it

Start in 50-50: one partner attacks, one escapes, 1-minute rounds without finishing.

Safety

Both knees are at risk: tap early and never spin out of a caught heel.
