50-50 Sweep

Sweep · Leg Locks

A sweep from the bottom of 50-50 to the top: you come up on your knees over him while his leg stays trapped between yours. It works when he sits back, weight behind his hips, to attack your heel or pull his leg out. Hide your heel first, then sit up toward him, grab his free leg at the ankle or the pants and pull it toward you so he cannot post or rebuild his base. Keep your outside leg over his hip and your knees pinched on his trapped leg, drive your weight forward off that entanglement and come up on your knees on top; from there pass to side control. The key detail is controlling his free leg: without it he follows you up and the position stays even. The common error is sitting up with your own heel left in his armpit.

How to do it

  1. Hide your own heel first: turn your trapped foot away from his armpit and keep the knee pointing to the ceiling.
  2. When he sits back, sit up toward him and grab his free leg at the ankle or the pants.
  3. Pull that leg toward you so he cannot post on it or rebuild his base.
  4. Keep your outside leg over his hip and your knees pinched on his trapped leg, and drive your weight forward.
  5. Come up on your knees on top with his leg still between yours, then clear his legs and pass to side control.

Key details

  • Control of his free leg decides the sweep: without it he follows you up.
  • Your heel stays hidden the whole way up: 50-50 is mutual.
  • Go when his weight is behind his hips, not when he sits up to you.

Common mistakes

  • Sitting up with the heel exposed. — He grabs the heel while you move forward. — Turn the foot away and hide the heel before you sit up.
  • Ignoring the free leg. — He posts on it and comes up with you. — Grab the ankle or the pants and pull it to you.
  • Releasing the entanglement on top. — He recovers guard before you pass. — Keep the knees pinched until you start the pass.

How to drill it

From 50-50 the partner sits back, you sit up, grab the free leg and come up on top, 8 each side.
