Outside Ashi Garami

Position · Leg Locks

Your legs wrap one of his legs from the outside: your outside foot is on his hip, your inside leg behind his thigh, and his foot is trapped under your armpit. Pinch your knees around his thigh and keep your hips close so the knee line stays trapped and he cannot pull the leg back. If the leg stays straight with the foot by your armpit, slide the forearm under his Achilles and arch for the Straight Ankle Lock. If he turns the knee out and opens the heel, cup the heel for the Outside Heel Hook. If he pushes with a flexed foot, that bent ankle gives you the Estima Lock. He wants to clear your foot off his hip and free the knee, or to roll; heel hooks damage the knee before real pain, so apply them slowly and let him tap.

How to do it

  1. From ashi garami, move your outside leg across their hip to the far side, so your leg blocks their hips from turning toward you.
  2. Both your legs are now on the outside of their trapped leg, pinching it from the outside.
  3. Squeeze the knees and pin their knee, so it stays past your hips and cannot be pulled out.
  4. Pull your hips tight to their hip so there is no space for the knee to slide out.
  5. Control the foot, hugging it to your chest: the heel is close to you and exposed for the heel hook.

Key details

  • The heel is exposed: this is a heel hook position.
  • Knee line controlled by your knees: without it the heel is useless, because they turn and hide it.
  • Stay tight to their hip: any space lets the knee slide back out.

Common mistakes

  • Space at the hip. — Their knee slides out past your hips. — Pull your hips tight to them.
  • Loose foot control. — They hide the heel and escape. — Keep the foot hugged to your chest.
  • Attacking before control. — The heel slips and the chance is lost. — Control the knee first, then attack the heel.

If they defend

  • They turn to hide the heel. → Follow to the saddle or switch to the ankle lock.
  • They step over to escape. → Keep the knee pinned and come up.

How to drill it
