Half Butterfly to Single Leg X

Transition · Half Guard

From half butterfly to a leg entanglement, used when he stands up to free his trapped leg. Keep the butterfly hook under his thigh and lift it as he rises, so his leg comes up to you instead of going back to the mat. Free your bottom leg, scoot your hips under him and hug the leg he was standing on to your chest. Thread that leg between yours: inside leg behind his thigh, outside foot on his hip, his foot under your armpit — single leg X, the ashi garami of the leg-lock tree. Slow hips leave a gap and he steps away; a loose hug lets the foot slip out. If he straightens the leg, the straight ankle lock; if he stands tall, the single leg X sweep.

How to do it

  1. In half butterfly, when he stands up, keep the butterfly hook under his thigh and lift it as he rises.
  2. Free your bottom leg and scoot your hips under him.
  3. Hug the leg he stands on to your chest, his foot going under your armpit.
  4. Thread that leg between yours: inside leg behind his thigh, outside foot on his hip. Pinch the knees.

Key details

  • Lift the hook as he stands so his leg comes to you, not back to the mat.
  • Fast hips: any gap between your hips and his leg and he steps away.
  • Outside foot on his hip keeps him from stepping over or driving into you.

Common mistakes

  • Holding the half guard while he stands. — He pulls the leg out and starts passing from standing. — Release the bottom leg and go under him.
  • A loose hug on the leg. — The foot slips out of the armpit. — Elbows tight, foot clamped to your ribs.
  • Knees apart. — His knee slides out past your hips. — Pinch the knees on his thigh.

How to drill it

Partner stands up from your half butterfly; enter single leg X, 8 each side.
