Aoki Lock

Submission · Leg Locks

A twisting foot lock: his toes are trapped in your armpit, your arm goes under his foot elbow-deep so the heel sits on your chest, and a figure-four turns the heel up toward your chin while the toes go down toward his buttocks — the same twist as an inside heel hook, so it loads the ankle and the knee. It comes from ashi garami or X-guard when his foot comes up onto your hip or chest or he bases on the trapped leg, and it is also a counter from the bottom of his ashi garami when he puts his foot back on your hip. Control the leg first: a hook in his hip, your knee inside his knee, body crunched tight. Catch the toes in the armpit, feed the arm under the heel and lock the figure-four with the hand under your armpit, not on the biceps. To escape he must lift his hip and turn, so throw your legs and weight over his hip, then rotate your body to the side rather than falling flat on your back. Held loose, the heel slips back in. It twists like a heel hook: rotate slowly and check the rules.

How to do it

  1. Control his leg in ashi garami or X-guard: a hook in his hip, your knee inside his knee, body crunched tight.
  2. When his foot comes up onto your hip or chest, catch his toes in your armpit.
  3. Feed the arm under his heel elbow-deep so the heel sits on your chest; lock the figure-four, the hand going under your other armpit, not onto the biceps.
  4. Throw your legs and weight over his hip so he cannot lift the hip and turn out.
  5. Finish: turn the heel up toward your chin and the toes down toward his buttocks, rotating your body to the side; slowly, and stop at the tap.

Key details

  • Toes in the armpit, heel out on your chest: the heel turns up, the toes turn down.
  • Your legs and weight over his hip: he escapes only by lifting the hip.
  • Stay tight and crunched; rotate to the side instead of falling back.

Common mistakes

  • A loose grip. — The heel slips back in and the twist is gone. — Feed the arm elbow-deep and pull the figure-four up tight to your chest.
  • Leaving his hip free. — He lifts the hip and turns with the rotation. — Throw your legs and weight over his hip before you rotate.
  • Falling flat on your back. — The control of the leg loosens and the pressure is lost. — Stay crunched and rotate toward your side.

How to drill it

From the bottom of ashi garami the partner puts his foot back on your hip; catch it on the forearm, feed the arm elbow-deep and lock the figure-four, 6 reps per side, no rotation.

Safety
