Hip Switch Pass

Guard pass · Half Guard

The hip switch takes you from headquarters or half guard top to side control when your knee slice is blocked. Keep the underhook or a crossface and your chest heavy on him. Post your free hand on the mat, sit through with your back leg under you so your hips turn to face his legs, and drop your hip onto his top thigh, pinning it to the mat; your weight now comes from the side, not into his knee. From this reverse base pull your trapped foot out from between his legs, then switch your hips back, face his head and settle chest to chest in side control. Keep your head and shoulder heavy on him through the whole switch, so he cannot turn in. If he turns to turtle, take the back with the seatbelt; if he gets his knee back in, use the Long Step Pass.

How to do it

  1. From headquarters or half guard top, start the knee slice with an underhook or crossface.
  2. When his top knee blocks the slice, stop driving into it and post your free hand on the mat.
  3. Sit through with your back leg under you so your hips turn to face his legs.
  4. Drop your hip onto his top thigh and pin it to the mat, keeping your shoulder heavy on him.
  5. Pull your trapped foot out from between his legs.
  6. Switch your hips back, face his head and settle chest to chest in side control.

Key details

  • Do not fight his knee: switch the angle so your weight comes from the side.
  • Your hip pins his top thigh before the trapped foot comes out.
  • Head and shoulder stay heavy on him through both switches.

Common mistakes

  • Switching without upper-body control. — He turns in and takes the underhook or your back. — Keep the underhook or crossface the whole time.
  • Pulling the foot before pinning the thigh. — His leg follows and traps the foot again. — Pin the thigh with your hip first.
  • Staying in the reverse position. — He recovers half guard or attacks a leg. — Switch back to side control at once.

How to drill it

Partner in half guard blocks the knee slice with his knee; 8 hip switches each side, then 1-minute rounds.
