Seatbelt Back Take

Transition · Turtle

Chest over their back, seatbelt over one shoulder and under the other arm, then place a hook and roll to the back.

How to do it

  1. Kneel beside their hips and put your chest on their upper back, hips low and weight on them, so they cannot lift up or turn in to you.
  2. Lock the seatbelt: one arm goes over their near shoulder and diagonally across the chest, the other goes under their far arm, through the armpit. Clasp your hands on their chest and pull them tight to your chest.
  3. Step behind them and insert the hook on the side of your under-arm: your instep goes inside their thigh, the heel pulling back toward you.
  4. Roll to that same side, onto your shoulder and hip, and pull them on top of you with the seatbelt so their back stays glued to your chest.
  5. As they land on you, insert the second hook inside their other thigh. Keep both heels inside their thighs and the feet apart, never crossed.

Key details

  • Seatbelt before hooks: the seatbelt glues their upper body to your chest, so when you roll they come with you; hooks alone only hold the hips.
  • Roll to the side of your lower arm: the arm under their armpit holds their body on you as you fall, so they cannot slide off your back.
  • Keep your chest glued to their back through the roll: any space between you lets them turn their shoulders and face you.
  • Attack the neck while you work the hooks: he cannot defend both, so if he guards the neck the hooks go in, and if he fights the hooks the choke opens.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling to the side of the top arm, the one over the shoulder. — Nothing holds their body on that side, so they fall off your back and turn to face you. — Roll to the side of the arm that is under their armpit.
  • Putting the hooks in before the seatbelt is locked. — Without upper body control the hooks alone cannot stop them rolling away or turning in. — Lock the seatbelt first, hands clasped on their chest, then place the hooks.
  • Crossing the feet in front of their body. — Crossed feet are easy to trap with their legs, and they answer with a foot lock. — Keep the heels inside their thighs and the feet apart.
