Top Spin

Guard pass · Open Guard

The top spin takes you around an inverting or turtling opponent to his back. The moment is when he turns upside down or onto his knees to re-guard and his back faces you. Keep your chest on his hips or back so he carries your weight, post one hand on the mat, and walk or spin your legs around his head side in the direction opposite to his turn, staying chest to back the whole way. You arrive behind him: seatbelt grip, then the hooks. The detail is contact: if your chest leaves him, he finishes the inversion and his legs come back in front of you. If he turns to turtle, take the Seatbelt Back Take; if he comes back square to you with his legs, go to the Leg Drag.

How to do it

  1. When he inverts or turns to turtle during your pass, keep your chest on his hips or back.
  2. Post one hand on the mat for base, the other arm hugging his hips or waist.
  3. Walk or spin your legs around toward his head, opposite to his turn, chest staying on him.
  4. Arrive behind him and take the seatbelt grip.
  5. Put in the hooks or continue in the Turtle tree.

Key details

  • Constant chest contact: he must carry your weight through the whole spin.
  • Spin opposite to his rotation so you meet his back, not his legs.
  • Seatbelt first, hooks second.

Common mistakes

  • Losing chest contact during the spin. — He finishes the inversion and his legs come back in front of you. — Keep your chest glued to his hips or back.
  • Spinning the same way he turns. — You chase his legs instead of his back. — Go the opposite way, toward his head side.
  • Diving for hooks before the seatbelt. — He turns back in and you lose the back. — Secure the seatbelt first.

How to drill it

Partner inverts or turtles from open guard on your pass; 8 top spins each direction, finishing with the seatbelt.
