Headquarters

Position · Open Guard

You are inside his open guard on one knee and one foot: your inside knee is wedged between his legs, pinning his thigh to the mat from the inside, and your other foot is planted outside the same leg, beside his hip: his leg is trapped between your knee and your foot. Your hands control his knees or pants, your hips stay low and your back straight, so his feet cannot reach your hips or chest. The pinned leg and your low base hold the position, and from here you can pass to either side. If his inside knee drops toward the mat, slide your knee across his thigh into the Knee Slice; if he pushes your hips away with his feet, step around to the other side with the Long Step. He wants to free the pinned leg and get a foot on your hip or a de la Riva hook; keep the pinning knee heavy and your head over your hips, not leaning forward into his guard.

How to do it

  1. From standing in open guard, drop one knee between their legs, so your shin lies along their inside thigh.
  2. Your other foot stays outside their leg, so that leg is trapped between your knee and your foot.
  3. Pin their inside knee to the mat with your hand, before you move, so it cannot rise into a knee shield.
  4. Keep your posture: hips low and heavy, head up, knees pinching their trapped leg as you lower your level.
  5. Pass to either side as soon as you are set: knee slice one way, long step the other.

Key details

  • Two directions at once: they cannot block both.
  • Pin the knee before you move; a free knee becomes a knee shield.
  • Hips low and heavy, sitting on their leg, so there is no room for a hook under you.
  • Pinch your knees on their trapped leg and lower your level, so the leg cannot slip out and wrap you.
  • It is a safe platform against leg entanglements while you choose the pass.

Common mistakes

  • Hips high. — There is space under you, so they insert a hook and sweep you. — Sit your weight low on their leg.
  • Not pinning the knee. — They recover the knee shield. — Pin the knee with your hand.
  • Waiting in the position. — They enter a leg entanglement. — Pass as soon as you are set.

If they defend

  • They go for your leg. → Step back and hide the heel.
  • They push your hips away. → Long step around the pushing leg.
