Bear Trap Back Take

Transition · Half Guard

From the bear trap to back control, used when he turns his back away to unwind the trapped leg. Keep the figure-four locked: it holds his leg and hips so they cannot run away from you. Come up on your elbow, reach over his back and take a grip across his chest or a seatbelt as he turns. Use the lock to pull his hips toward you, then open the legs and put a hook in at once, followed by the second hook or a body triangle. Opening the lock before the upper-body grip is set lets him turn the hips away and stand; reaching for the neck before the hooks lets him slide back out. If he turns back in to you, return to the bear trap; if he stands up, wrestle up on the single leg.

How to do it

  1. From the bear trap, when he turns his back away, keep the figure-four locked on his leg.
  2. Come up on your elbow and reach over his back for a grip across the chest or a seatbelt.
  3. Pull his hips toward you with the lock while your chest glues to his back.
  4. Open the legs and put the first hook in at once, then the second hook or a body triangle.

Key details

  • The lock holds his hips: keep it until the upper-body grip is set.
  • Upper body first, hooks second, the neck last.
  • Go with his turn, not against it: he is turning his back to you himself.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the lock too early. — His hips run away and he stands up. — Set the seatbelt first, then open the legs.
  • Reaching for the neck straight away. — Without hooks he slides his back out and turns in. — Put the hooks or a body triangle in before attacking the neck.
  • Staying flat while he turns. — Your arm cannot reach over his back. — Come up on your elbow as soon as he starts to turn.

How to drill it

Partner turns away from your bear trap on your signal; take the back, 6 each side.
