Tornado Sweep

Sweep · Half Guard

An inverted half guard sweep from the knee shield to the top, for when the opponent drives heavy into the shield. Put your bottom arm between his legs and grip his trapped leg, and grip the opposite collar with the other hand as a pulling anchor. Kick the shield leg out and swing it like a pendulum to turn upside down under him, rolling over your shoulders, not your neck. Put the shin of the swinging leg on his back to keep his posture broken, then pull the collar, load him onto your legs and straighten them to send him over. Without the first grip on the leg you just roll away from him; the pendulum and the grips do the work, not strength. If he posts and postures up, the triangle is there. Drill the inversion slowly: the load goes on the shoulders, never the neck.

How to do it

  1. From half guard with a knee shield, put your bottom arm between their legs and grip their trapped leg.
  2. Grip the opposite collar with your other hand as a pulling anchor.
  3. Kick the shield leg out and swing it like a pendulum to turn upside down under them, rolling over your shoulders, not your neck.
  4. Put the shin of the swinging leg on their back to keep the posture broken.
  5. Pull the collar, load them onto your legs and straighten the legs to send them over; come up on top.

Key details

  • The first grip on the trapped leg is the key: without it you just roll away from them.
  • The pendulum and the two grips do the work, not strength.
  • The shin on their back keeps their posture down and protects your foot from a toe hold.
  • If they post and posture up, the triangle or the omoplata is there.
  • Commit the bottom hand to their leg and roll over the shoulder on the free side, kicking the swinging leg like a pendulum: the sweep cuts through the hip side where they have no base, it is not a push with your arms.

Common mistakes

  • Inverting without the grip on the trapped leg. — They step away and you end up upside down with nothing. — Grip the trapped leg first, then invert.
  • Relying on strength against a heavy opponent. — Pushing from the side, you cannot move their weight, and they stack you and pass. — Get fully under them before you push.
  • Rolling over the neck. — The neck takes your weight and theirs. — Invert on the shoulders; drill the Granby roll first.

If they defend

  • They squeeze your leg between theirs. → Step on their hip with the free leg to free it and invert again.

How to drill it

Granby rolls and wall shoulder rolls, then tornado entries from the knee shield, 6 each side, slowly.

Safety

Inversions load the neck: warm up, roll on the shoulders and stop if the partner stacks you.
