Knee Shield

Position · Half Guard

You are on your side facing him with his leg trapped between yours; your top knee is in front of his chest and your top shin is a frame across his chest or hip, holding him off at an angle. One hand controls his wrist or sleeve, the other fights for the underhook or holds his collar. What holds it: the shin frame kept at an angle so he cannot fold it flat, your hips on their side, and control of his arm so he cannot reach across your face. Leans onto the shield — knee shield sweep; denies the underhook — deep half guard; drives heavy into the shield — tornado sweep; drops his head — guillotine from bottom; posts a hand on the mat — kimura. He wants to flatten the shield and pass over or around it; the detail beginners miss is keeping the knee in front of his chest, not letting it drop to his belly.

How to do it

  1. From half guard, turn onto your side facing them; flat on your back the shield gets smashed.
  2. Put the top shin diagonally across their chest, knee toward their shoulder, foot on their hip. The knee stays at chest height or higher, never low across the stomach.
  3. Grip the collar or wrist with your top hand, the underhook or sleeve with the other, so the hands frame together with the shin.
  4. Keep their chest away with the shield, so their weight never lands on your chest; if a frame collapses, rebuild it at once.
  5. When they push into the shield or post, use that reaction to sweep or take the back.

Key details

  • The shield keeps their weight off your chest, which is what lets you move and attack from the bottom.
  • On your side, never flat: on your side the shin stays angled and strong.
  • Frame with the shin and hands together; the shin alone gets pushed aside.
  • Not across the stomach and not flat: a low or flat shield gets smashed.

Common mistakes

  • Knee too low on the belly. — They push it down and crush you. — Keep the knee at chest height, pointing to their shoulder.
  • Lying flat. — They flatten the shield and pass. — Stay on your side facing them.
  • No grips. — Nothing holds their upper body, so they walk their hips around the shield. — Grip the collar and the sleeve.

If they defend

  • They knee slice under the shield. → Come up to the underhook and dogfight.
  • They smash the shield flat. → Recover the shield with a shrimp.

How to drill it

Half guard rounds where you must keep the shield for 1 minute, 3 rounds.
