Back Take (RDLR)
Chain finish · Open Guard
Switch the hook to reverse De La Riva as they retreat, follow their rotation, and climb to the back.
How to do it
- When they step away from De La Riva, switch the hook to the inside (reverse De La Riva): your leg goes between their legs and hooks deep around their lead thigh from the inside, your knee behind theirs.
- Stay on your side, not flat, and grip the far pants or belt with a deep grip.
- Follow their turn in the direction they run, moving your hips under them first and rolling under to their back; the far grip pulls you under, the arms only follow.
- Come up with hooks and the seatbelt: climb hand over hand from the leg grip to the hips and up to the shoulder, take the seatbelt, then set the second hook.
Key details
- Use the direction they run to: they are already turning away, so you follow their rotation instead of fighting it.
- Hook deep around the thigh from the inside, your knee behind theirs, so the leg cannot step out of the hook.
- The far pants or belt grip pulls you under them: it is your handle to slide your hips beneath their base.
- Stay on your side in RDLR: flat on your back you cannot follow them.
- Climb with the hands: move the grip from the far pants to the belt and then the shoulder, so your chest stays connected to his back as you come up.
Common mistakes
- Chasing with the arms. — Reaching with the arms leaves your hips behind, and they pass while you stretch. — Move your hips under them; the arms only follow.
- A shallow reverse hook. — A shallow reverse hook has no grip on the thigh and they step out of it. — Hook deep around the thigh so your knee is behind theirs.
- No belt or pants grip. — Nothing pulls you to the back, so they turn and walk away from you. — Grab the far pants or belt: that grip pulls you around to the back.
