Open Guard

You are on your back or seated on one hip in front of the opponent with no closed lock: your feet and shins are the first line, on his hips, biceps, knees or shins, and your hands grip sleeves, collar, ankles or pants. Keep at least one foot or knee connected to him, knees pointed at him and hips free to turn, so you can face him wherever he moves. His stance picks the guard: standing tall over you invites spider, lasso or De La Riva; a lead leg close to you invites De La Riva, K-guard or shin-to-shin; his head coming low invites seated-guard attacks. His goal is to pin your legs and get past your knees to your hips. The detail beginners miss: never let your knees fall outward or stop turning toward him; once he controls your legs, the pass has started.
