Lasso Omoplata

Submission · Open Guard

A shoulder lock with your legs: his arm is bent behind his back under your hip, and your lean forward rotates the shoulder inward. It comes from lasso guard when he drops a knee to pass under your lasso leg. Keep the sleeve grip and turn out on the lasso leg, bringing it over his shoulder onto his back. The lasso already controls the arm, so you only change its angle. Sit up at once facing his feet and hug his far hip or grab his belt, so he cannot roll forward. Flatten him to the mat, walk your hips toward his feet, then scoot the hips forward and lean toward his head. Beginners stay on their back, and he simply postures out. If he rolls forward, follow to side control; if he postures up, take the lasso sweep. Lean slowly.

How to do it

  1. From lasso guard, keep the sleeve grip and feel them drop the knee to pass under your lasso leg.
  2. Turn out on the lasso leg, bringing it over the top of their shoulder to their back, still holding the sleeve so the arm stays trapped: the lasso already controls the arm, you only change its angle.
  3. Sit up at once, facing their feet, and hug their far hip (or grab the belt) so they cannot roll forward out of it.
  4. Break their alignment and get them flat on the mat, walking your legs and hips toward their feet.
  5. Scoot the hips forward and lean toward their head to turn the shoulder: the trapped arm is bent behind their back, and your forward lean rotates the shoulder.

Key details

  • The lasso already controls the arm; you only change its angle, so keep the sleeve during the turn.
  • Sit up at once; on your back it is just a leg on their shoulder, and they posture out.
  • Control the far hip before finishing: it stops the forward roll that unwinds the shoulder.
  • Even if the finish fails, the motion often sweeps them, so be ready to come up on top.
  • Break their alignment and get them flat before you lean forward to finish.
  • His instinct is to rip the arm out of the lasso: as he pulls, pluck his elbow into your hip pocket and shoot the lasso leg up over the shoulder at once, so his pull feeds the omoplata.
  • To spin to his hips without straining the neck, keep the shoulders and head on the mat, lift the hips on your toes and tuck the elbow under them; let go of the collar to free that elbow.

Common mistakes

  • Losing the lasso as you turn. — Without the lasso the arm slides free and there is nothing to lock. — Keep the sleeve grip during the turn.
  • Staying on your back. — From your back the leg has no weight on their shoulder, so they posture and pull the arm. — Sit up and face their feet.
  • No hip control. — They roll forward over the shoulder and escape. — Hug the far hip or grab the belt.

How to drill it

Lasso, partner drops the knee, you turn to omoplata, 6 each side.

Safety
