K-Guard

Position · Open Guard

You sit on one hip in front of his lead leg: your inside leg crosses under that leg to the outside, knee flared out, the other foot is on his hip, and your hands hold his ankle or pants. Rather than let a cleared De La Riva hook go, thread the shin under the leg into this frame: it holds up where the thin DLR hook gets cut. The shin under his leg and the foot on his hip keep his leg off the mat and his hips at a distance. If his lead leg stays close you go into the single leg X entry; if he turns away you start the berimbolo; it is also an entry to leg locks and the back. He wants to step back out or pin your knee to the mat; keep the shin lifting his leg and stay on your side.

How to do it

  1. Against a kneeling opponent, turn onto your side from half guard or open guard, keeping your feet in front of them.
  2. Thread your inside leg under their lead leg so the knee points out, like the letter K.
  3. Put the other foot on their hip to hold the distance, so they cannot step forward and smash your legs.
  4. Underhook their near leg with your bottom arm and pull them onto you with your legs, so the trapped leg gets light.
  5. Off-balance them backwards and enter single leg X or the back at once; it is an entry, not a place to stay.

Key details

  • The threaded knee points out, like the letter K: that angle frames their leg and holds up where a thin De La Riva hook gets cut.
  • Foot on the hip keeps the distance.
  • It is an entry, not a place to stay.
  • Pull them onto you with your legs so the trapped leg gets light before you lift it.
  • Keep your feet in front: if they get past them, they body-lock and flatten you.

Common mistakes

  • No foot on the hip. — They step forward and smash your legs. — Keep the far foot on the hip.
  • Letting go of the leg. — They step out of the threaded leg. — Grip the ankle or the pants.
  • Waiting in the position. — They settle and start passing. — Enter single leg X at once.

If they defend

  • They step back. → Follow the leg to a single leg.
  • They drop the knee to pass. → Turn under to the back.
