Deep De La Riva

Position · Open Guard

Your De La Riva hook goes deep: your knee is behind his lead knee, the foot reaches behind his far leg, and your hips slide under him while your arm hugs his lead leg tight to your chest. Your hips under his center and the hug on the leg take away his base: he cannot step the leg away, and his weight sits on your hook. When he sits back on the hook to stop being pulled forward, the berimbolo entry opens. He wants to backstep out or drop his weight forward to flatten you and walk around. Stay on your side under him and keep hugging the leg: if the hug loosens, he steps out and you are lying flat under a passer.

How to do it

  1. From De La Riva, slide your hook deeper so the foot reaches behind their far leg, past their far hip.
  2. Scoot your hips under them, close to the near leg, with your hips slightly off the mat so you can shift and spin.
  3. Grip the far pant leg or the belt: the far-side grip stops them stepping away.
  4. Attack while they stand tall: the berimbolo, a back take or a sweep pushing the far hip.

Key details

  • Hips under them, not in front: from in front, they sit back and kill the hook.
  • The deep hook controls both legs.
  • Keep a grip on the far side.
  • The foot reaches past their far hip: a shallow hook is easy to strip.
  • Lift the hips slightly off the mat so you can shift and spin.

Common mistakes

  • Hook deep but hips far. — They sit back and kill the hook. — Scoot your hips under them.
  • No far-side grip. — They step away and pass. — Take the belt or far pant leg.
  • Staying too long. — They settle their weight on your legs. — Attack while they stand tall.

If they defend

  • They sit back on the hook. → Berimbolo to the back.
  • They stand tall and square. → Kiss of the dragon to the back.

How to drill it

From De La Riva, 10 deep hook entries each side; then 1-minute rounds from deep De La Riva.
