Bottom of Turtle

Position · Turtle

You are on your knees and elbows, elbows tight to your knees and chin tucked, with him on your back or at your side. Keep no gap between elbows and knees so he cannot insert hooks or a seatbelt, and keep your hands protecting the neck. If he drives toward your head, roll under for the Granby Roll; rides your side with an arm on your waist, trap the arm and roll with the Peterson Roll; behind you with an arm around the waist, sit and reach for the Switch; lies on your back to flatten you, the Sit-Out; sits beside you pushing the shoulder, the Turtle Guard Sweep; holds your waist from behind, the Stand-Up from Bottom. His goals are hooks, the back, the crucifix and front chokes; do not stay static.

How to do it

  1. Keep your elbows glued to your knees. With no gap between them, there is no space for their hooks to slide in or for their arms to reach under your armpits.
  2. Chin down and hands protecting the neck, forearms close to your face. This blocks their arm from sliding across your throat.
  3. Keep your hips low, sitting back towards your heels, so the hooks cannot go in. A high hip leaves space between your thighs and belly for their feet.
  4. Move at once: sit out, roll or stand up before they settle their weight and grips.

Key details

  • Turtle is a transition, not a place to stay: it holds for a moment, and the longer you stay, the more grips they collect.
  • No gaps between elbows and knees: every gap is an entry for a hook or a seatbelt.
  • Every second in turtle is a chance for the back: they need only one hook and one arm across your chest.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows away from the knees. — Their hooks and seatbelt slide into the gap. — Close the gap between elbows and knees.
  • Staying still in turtle. — They settle their weight and take the back. — Sit out, roll or stand right away.
  • Reaching out for their legs. — The extended arm gets trapped and the gap under it opens. — Keep the arms tight, elbows on your knees.

If they defend

  • They put a hook in. → Roll to the hook side or clear it.
  • They clock choke you. → Hands to the collar and turn in.

How to drill it

Turtle rounds: they try to take the back, you escape, 3 × 1 minute.
