Peek-Out

Escape · Turtle

A wrestling escape from under a sprawl or a snap-down: you slide out from under his chest to his side and come up behind him. The moment is when he sprawls on you with your head trapped under his chest. Get your head out to one side and press your ear against his hip. Step the foot on that same side forward and lift that knee off the mat. Post on the opposite arm and kick the other leg through under you, so your hips turn and you slide out from under him toward his back. Come up at his side and go behind him onto his turtle. Leaving the head in the middle keeps you under his weight. If he circles to face you, his legs are close: single leg; if he wraps your neck as you turn, defend the guillotine first.

How to do it

  1. When he sprawls on you, get your head out to one side and press your ear against his hip.
  2. Step the foot on that same side forward and lift that knee off the mat.
  3. Post on the opposite arm.
  4. Kick the other leg through under you so your hips turn and you slide out from under him.
  5. Come up at his side and go behind him onto his turtle.

Key details

  • Head out first: while it is under his chest, his weight pins you.
  • Knee off the mat: you cannot turn the hips from your knees.
  • Slide toward his back, not toward his front.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing straight up into his chest. — He sprawls harder and you stay under him. — Move the head to his hip and go sideways.
  • Staying on both knees. — The hips cannot turn. — Step the foot up and lift the knee.
  • Stopping halfway at his side. — He turns to face you again. — Keep going until you are behind him.

How to drill it

Partner sprawls on you: 8 peek-outs at half resistance, alternating sides.
