Sit-Out

Escape · Turtle

Gets you out of the bottom of turtle to face him on your knees or feet. The moment is when he lies on your back and starts to flatten you; move now, because on your belly there is no room for the leg. Post the hand on the side of the leg you kick through and keep the other elbow glued to your ribs so he cannot take an underhook. Kick that leg through under your body toward the tight-elbow side as far as it goes, hips up and eyes to the ceiling, sit on your hip and turn your chest toward him, so his weight slides off your back. Never stop sideways: your back is still open there. Come up facing him with your hands as frames; if he grabs your far arm, use the Granby roll.

How to do it

  1. On your turtle, feel their weight settle on your back; move now, before they flatten you or put hooks in.
  2. Post the hand on the same side as the leg you will kick through (a diagonal base with the opposite foot), keeping the other elbow tight to your ribs so they cannot take an underhook.
  3. Kick that leg through under your body toward the side of the tight elbow, as far as it goes, hips up and eyes toward the ceiling.
  4. Sit on your hip and turn your chest towards them, the weight coming off your back as you turn.
  5. Come up to your knees facing them, or stand up, with your hands in front as frames.

Key details

  • Move before they flatten you: on your belly there is no room to kick the leg through.
  • Elbows tight: no underhooks for them, so they have nothing to hold you with as you turn.
  • Turn to face them, never stay sideways: sideways your back is still open.
  • Base on the diagonal: one hand and the opposite foot stay planted, toes of the base foot turned out; the other hand lifts and the other leg kicks through.

Common mistakes

  • Sitting out with an arm out. — They take the arm and the back. — Keep the elbow tight to the ribs.
  • Stopping on the hip. — They follow and take the back. — Keep turning until you face them.
  • Waiting too long. — Their hooks go in and you lose the back. — Sit out as soon as the weight lands.

If they defend

  • They follow your turn. → Switch direction and sit out the other way.

How to drill it

Solo sit-outs 3 × 10 each side. Then 30-second rounds against a partner on your back.
