Turtle Guard Sweep

Sweep · Turtle

Sweeps him from your turtle so you come out on top in side control. The moment is when he sits to one side of your turtle and pushes on your shoulder. Keep your elbows tight to your knees, reach under yourself and grab his far leg or his belt firmly: without the grip you roll alone. Drop the shoulder on his side to the mat, head tucked and turned so you go over the shoulder, not the head, and roll across your back toward the side he sits on, so his weight on that side goes over with you. Hold on through the whole roll, then settle chest heavy on his chest. If he posts a leg to stop it, sit out; if he follows the roll, recover guard.

How to do it

  1. They sit to one side of your turtle and push on your shoulder; keep your elbows tight to your knees.
  2. Reach under yourself and grab their far leg or belt, holding firmly so they come with you.
  3. Drop the shoulder on their side to the mat, head tucked and turned so you roll over the shoulder, not the head.
  4. Roll over your back toward the side they sit on, taking them with you by the grip.
  5. Come out on top and settle in side control, chest heavy on their chest.

Key details

  • Grip first: without it you roll alone.
  • Roll towards the side they sit on: their weight on that side goes over with you.
  • Keep hold during the roll: let go and they land on top.
  • Under IBJJF rules a reversal from turtle scores no sweep points, because your legs were not involved; it still takes you from a bad position to the top.

Common mistakes

  • Rolling without a grip. — You roll alone and they take the back. — Take the leg or belt first.
  • Rolling away from them. — Rolling away leaves them on top. — Roll towards their side.
  • Neck loaded in the roll. — Rolling over the head loads the neck. — Roll over the shoulder, not the head.

How to drill it

Partner sits beside your turtle, 6 rolls each side, slowly.
