Hook Roll

Escape · Turtle

A counter to the spiral ride from the bottom of the turtle: instead of resisting his diagonal drive, you trap his arm, hook his leg and roll with it so he goes over you. The moment is early, when he chops your near arm and starts turning you, before your head drops below your hips and your belly is flat. Keep your head up, clamp the arm he rides with tight to your body, hook his near leg with your leg so he cannot step away, and roll toward the side he is driving to, over your shoulder with the chin tucked. His own drive carries him over; keep the arm until he lands on his back, then come up on top. Pushing straight back only flattens you. If he lets go of the arm and posts, sit out; if he frees his leg, switch to the Granby roll.

How to do it

  1. When he chops your near arm and drives across your back, clamp his riding arm tight to your body.
  2. Hook his near leg with your leg so he cannot step away.
  3. Tuck your chin and roll toward the side he is driving to, over your shoulder.
  4. Let his own drive carry him over; keep the arm until he lands on his back.
  5. Come up on top and settle your weight before he turns in.

Key details

  • Roll with his drive, not against it.
  • Both hooks, arm and leg: without them he just steps over the roll.
  • Move early, head up, before your head drops below your hips and you are flat.

Common mistakes

  • Pushing back against the ride. — He uses your push to flatten you. — Go with his drive.
  • Rolling without the leg hook. — He steps around and stays on top. — Hook the near leg before you roll.
  • Releasing the arm mid-roll. — He posts and lands on his feet. — Hold it until he is on his back.

How to drill it

Partner starts the spiral ride at half speed: 6 hook rolls each side.
