Peterson Roll

Escape · Turtle

Reverses the bottom of turtle so you come out on top, chest to chest. The moment is when he rides your side with an arm around your waist. Clamp that arm at the elbow with your arm over it, tight to your ribs: a trapped arm cannot post. Sit the leg on the same side deep through under you so your hips turn and drop, then roll to your side toward the trapped arm, carrying him over your back; chin tucked, keep the clamp until he lands on his back, then finish the roll on top. The clamp is the whole move: loosen it and he posts and lands on his feet. If he pulls the arm out, sit out; if he drives forward, switch to the Granby roll.

How to do it

  1. In turtle, with their arm around your waist, trap that arm with yours: clamp it at the elbow with your arm over it, tight against your ribs.
  2. Sit through with the leg on the same side, deep forward under you, so your hips turn and drop toward the mat.
  3. Roll to your side toward the trapped arm, bringing them over your back: their arm is clamped, so they cannot post and must go with you.
  4. Keep the arm clamped through the whole roll, chin tucked, so they land on their back and not on their feet.
  5. Finish the roll and come up on top of them, chest to chest.

Key details

  • The trapped arm cannot post to stop the roll: it is the whole reason they go over.
  • Sit your leg through deep: a deep sit-through turns your hips and starts the roll.
  • Roll toward the trapped arm: that is the side where they have no post.

Common mistakes

  • Not trapping the arm. — They post the free arm and stay on top. — Clamp the arm at the elbow, tight to your ribs.
  • Rolling the wrong way. — Rolling away from the trapped arm lets them fall off and escape. — Roll toward the trapped arm.
  • Stopping halfway. — You end on your back with them beside you. — Finish the roll and come up on top.

How to drill it

Turtle: partner rides on the side, you Peterson roll, 8 each side.
