Ghost Escape

Escape · Side Control

Takes you from bottom side control to your knees or feet by turning under him to the far side. The moment is when he sits high on your chest with his hips up off the mat and your far side free. Bridge to make space and swim your near arm inside, from a frame into a deep underhook: drive it up into his armpit and thread it under his body to his far side; never let him clamp it outside on your triceps. Turn onto your side, whip your legs to bump your hips under him, pull him close and come out through the hole under his armpit toward his head, head out last and fast: the head is what he can trap. Come up facing him with your hands as frames. With his hips low there is no room, so choose another escape. If he sprawls on your back as you come up, sit out.

How to do it

  1. They sit high on your chest in side control; the far side is free and their hips are high, away from the mat.
  2. Bridge to make space and swim your near arm inside: turn the frame into a deep underhook, driving it up into their armpit.
  3. Thread that arm all the way under their body to the far side, turn onto your side and whip your legs to bump your hips under them, pulling them close.
  4. Come out through the hole under their armpit toward their head, head out last and fast, as your knees come under you.
  5. Come up on your knees and face them or stand, hands in front as frames.

Key details

  • Only when their hips are high: with their hips low there is no room to turn under.
  • Bridge creates the space, the turn uses it.
  • Head out last and fast: the head is what they can trap.
  • Near arm inside, never clamped outside: once they cover your triceps, there is no ghost.
  • Use the legs, not only the arm: lying on your side at about 45 degrees, whip your legs open to bump your hips under them.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the near arm outside their arm. — They clamp your triceps and the arm can no longer get under them. — Bridge and swim the arm inside into an underhook.
  • Turning without a bridge. — Without the bridge there is no space to turn. — Bridge first, then turn.
  • Turning into their weight. — Turning into their weight lets them flatten you. — Turn when they move high.

If they defend

  • They take the far arm. → Pull it free before you turn.
