Fat Man Roll

Escape · Turtle

A reversal from the bottom of the turtle: you roll over your shoulder with his arm trapped and come up on top. The moment is when he holds a body lock with his hands joined and leans in with his near hip, near leg posted; reaching over you is the same gift. Grab his wrist so the arm stays on you, turn slightly and rest your shin on top of his calf — do not hook the leg fully, or he can figure-four your legs after the roll. Keep the head down and roll over your shoulder toward him: his lean carries him onto his back. Do not stay facing up: scoot your hips back belly-down, step over his knees for mount or go to north-south. Without the shelf on his leg he steps back, sprawls and pins you. If he unlocks his hands, stand up the wrestling way; if he turns his knees toward you, step over into mount.

How to do it

  1. On your turtle, when he locks his hands around your waist and drives his near hip in, grab his wrist.
  2. Turn slightly toward him and rest your shin on top of his calf; do not hook the leg.
  3. Head down, roll over your shoulder toward him, keeping the wrist.
  4. As he lands on his back, scoot your hips back and turn belly-down.
  5. Step over his knees into mount, or go to north-south.

Key details

  • His lean is the power: the harder he drives his hip in, the easier he goes over.
  • Shin on the calf stops him stepping back; a full hook only gives him your legs.
  • Locked hands — threaten the roll; hands apart — stand up.

Common mistakes

  • No shelf on his leg. — He steps back, sprawls and pins you. — Rest the shin on his calf before you roll.
  • Fully hooking his leg. — After the roll he can figure-four your legs and slow you down. — Shin on top of the calf, not a hook.
  • Lifting the head during the roll. — He crossfaces and bridges you back. — Keep the head down until you are on top.

How to drill it

Partner in a body lock leaning in: 5 slow rolls each side, then scoot back to mount.
