Stand-Up from Bottom

Escape · Turtle

Takes you from bottom of turtle, with him behind you holding your waist, back to your feet facing him. First control his hands: grab his top hand at the wrist with both hands and pin it to your belt line, or he lifts you and returns you to the mat. Post one foot flat by your hip, head up, back straight, then drive up and back into his chest off that foot, hips under you, so he carries your weight instead of riding you forward. Peel his hands down off your waist while your back stays tight against him, and turn out to face him the moment they open, still holding the wrist. Dropping the head rounds the back and lets him ride you; if he lifts and returns you, rebuild the base and stand again.

How to do it

  1. On your knees with them behind you, control their hands at your waist: grab their top hand at the wrist with both hands and pin it to your belt line. Without hand control they can lift you or switch grips the moment you rise.
  2. Post one foot flat on the mat, knee up, close to your hip, with your head up and back straight. The posted foot is your base for driving up.
  3. Drive your back into them and stand up: push off the posted foot backwards and up into their chest, hips under you. Leaning back into them makes them carry your weight instead of riding you forward.
  4. Peel their hands off your waist: keep the wrist grip and push their hands down and off your belt line while your back stays tight against them.
  5. As soon as the hands open, turn out to face them, keeping hold of the wrist as you turn.

Key details

  • Hand control before you stand: if their hands stay locked at your waist, they lift you and return you to the mat.
  • Back into them, not away: leaning back keeps your spine upright and their weight under you, not on your back.
  • Head up the whole time: when the head drops, the back rounds and they ride you forward.
  • Turn out as soon as the hands open: with your back to them you are still exposed to the body lock.

Common mistakes

  • Standing up without hand control. — Their hands stay locked at your waist, so they lift you and return you to the mat. — Hold their hands at your waist first, then stand.
  • Leaning forward as you stand. — Your back rounds and their weight comes onto it, so they ride your back and take hooks. — Keep your back upright and drive it back against them, head up.
  • Staying with your back to them after standing. — Your back is still in front of them and they take the body lock again. — Turn to face them right away, keeping hold of the wrist.

If they defend

  • They trip your posted leg. → Switch legs and post again.
