You sit up in front of the opponent with both feet hooked inside his thighs, knees apart, chest upright and your back off the mat. Underhooks and the hooks give you the lift for sweeps, but the upper body steers: the underhook or collar tie turns him the way you want, the hook just lifts his weight onto that side. With underhook control his weight comes onto you and the butterfly sweep opens. If he sits back away from you, he has to extend a leg, stand, pull his hips back or post an arm, and each of those opens its own move. If he drives forward, flattening your hooks or keeping his head low, other options open. His goal is to push you flat onto your back and kill the hooks; never lie flat, keep sitting up.
