Single Leg from Butterfly

Sweep · Butterfly Guard

From butterfly guard you come up off your back and finish a single leg, landing on top. The moment is when he sits back and pulls his hips away from your hooks to escape the sweep. Follow him up at once onto one knee: punch your arm between his legs, put your head inside against his chest and hug one leg tight. Drive forward through him and turn the corner toward the hugged leg; if he stays low, trip his base leg with your leg. Timing decides it: you rise while his hips are still moving back, and if you are late he is set and sprawls. Pulling the leg toward you instead of driving through also invites the sprawl. If he sprawls, return to Butterfly Guard; if he catches your neck, go to Guillotine Defense.

How to do it

  1. When they pull their hips back, follow them up at once and come up on one knee.
  2. Follow their energy: punch your grip between their legs, head inside against their chest, and hug a leg.
  3. Drive forward through them, not pulling the leg toward you, and turn the corner toward the hugged leg.
  4. If they stay low, use your leg against their base leg to trip them. Land on top.

Key details

  • Follow them up at once, while their hips are going back: that movement is your entry.
  • Keep your head inside, against their chest.
  • Drive forward through them to finish; pulling the leg to you only invites the sprawl.
  • If they stay low, use your leg against their base leg to trip them.

Common mistakes

  • Staying seated. — They pass while you are still on your back. — Come up on a knee as soon as their hips go back.
  • Head outside their body. — With the head outside, the neck is right under their arm and they catch a guillotine. — Keep your ear on their chest, inside.
